A couple days ago, HEAB provided us with a very handy side-by-side nutritional comparison of oat bran vs. rolled oats, and seeing the stats 'on paper' was enough to convince me I needed to try it. Above is my first experiment. Here's what you'd find in and on top of that blob:
- 1/3 cup oat bran
- 1/3 cup each water and vanilla soymilk
- 1/4 cup egg whites
- 1/4 cup pumpkin
- 1 tbsp Spicy Maple Fig Sauce
- 1 tbsp coconut
- 1 tbsp sliced almonds
- 1 Smyrna fig, cut up with scissors
The verdict? It's a hit! The creamy texture of oat brain (typo, but I'm keeping it) is a fun change from regular rolled oats. But since there's less substance to chew, that's why I went all out with the toppings and did actual almonds as opposed to almond butter (sorry Heather, I have betrayed you).
A great start to my Valentine's Day! Despite the fact that I am without boyfriend for this week, I have some fun plans for tonight. Alex left me with a homemade mix CD to listen to today, though. He even decorated the cover (in case you can't read it, it says "Why crayons? Why not?").
Rock 'n' roll! Not the oats, though - just the bran for me, thanks.
